This didn't start as a business idea.
Back in 1979, a group of Colorado outdoorsmen were spending weeks at a time deep in the Rockies. The gear available just wasn't keeping up. Straps dug in. Loads sat wrong. Organization was an afterthought. So they started building their own. Prototyping new designs in the field, between trips, from whatever materials they had on hand.
That scrappy mindset produced some real firsts. The first patented lumbar pack. The Delta Load Compression system that shifts heavy loads away from your shoulders. One of the outdoor industry's first sidecountry ski packs.
Forty-five years later, we're still in Golden, Colorado. Still testing in the same mountains where it all started. Still run on the same principle that drove those original builders into the woods with a sewing kit and a better idea: if the gear doesn't hold up out there, it doesn't belong in our lineup.
If you have questions about which pack fits what you're doing, just hit reply. I read these.
And if you haven't used your welcome discount yet. Code MOUNTAINSMITH10 takes $10 off your first order and expires in 13 days.

H2: From the People Who Actually Use the Gear
Infographic: Numbered List
- 1. On organization and finding gear fast. "Pockets and storage everywhere but nothing gets lost due to the different colored zippers and pulls. The blaze orange interior makes it impossible to lose even the smallest item.". Josh H., Search and Rescue Team
- 2. On durability over the long haul. "I bought the predecessor of this pack in the 1980's. Over time it mostly became a day hike and beach bag until finally giving out around 2010. I was so happy to be reunited with my old friend. It's the same but better.". William M.
- 3. On fit and versatility for real conditions. "Light, simple, and made from relatively durable materials. Internal storage is enough for three season. Side pouches are large enough for full size nalgene but tight enough to keep it in place.". Manitou W.
- 4. On expanding what you already own. "Completely changes my Day lumbar pack. Loved these style shoulder straps on my Zerk 40. Could not be happier.". John D.
- 5. On stability for hikers who need it. "I am 68 years old and I noticed I was losing my balance sometimes especially coming downhill. They sticks are the best.". Larry V.

I noticed you haven't used your welcome discount yet and wanted to check in.
No pressure at all. Maybe the timing wasn't right, or you're still figuring out which pack fits what you're doing. That's completely fine.
But if you had questions. About sizing, about which lumbar pack is right for your trip, about whether the EVO system is worth it. I'm happy to answer. Just hit reply. These come to me directly.
Mountainsmith has been building gear in Golden, Colorado since 1979. We back everything with a lifetime warranty because we built it to last, not because we have to. That promise doesn't change whether you buy today or six months from now.
If there's something holding you back, let me know. I'd rather help you find the right gear than have you walk away with the wrong impression.
Code MOUNTAINSMITH10 takes $10 off your first order and expires today. If you've been on the fence, this is the moment.

Let's get your free welcome flow set up →Where most DTC brands leak revenue on email
These are the patterns we see across almost every $100K-$500K/month store before we start working together:
- ✕Most DTC welcome flows cut off after 2-3 emails, right when new subscribers are at peak intent and open rates are highest.
- ✕Relying on discount codes as the primary incentive trains your list to wait for deals instead of buying on brand desire.
- ✕The founder story and origin of the brand gets buried on the about page and never shows up in email, losing the biggest differentiator a small brand has.
- ✕Zero segmentation between first-time buyers and repeat customers, so everyone gets the same generic promo blasts.
- ✕Abandoned cart flows stop at one email. Industry benchmark recovers 2-3× more revenue with a 3-touch sequence layered with real objection handling.
Four pillars. No fluff.
Trust Transfer
Plain text founder emails convert your existing audience trust into buyer confidence in a way designed emails never can.
Layered Objection Removal
Each email removes one specific purchase barrier, so by the final send the only thing left between them and a purchase is inertia.
Controlled Urgency Curve
Discount pressure starts casual and escalates to real scarcity, without training subscribers to wait for the next deal.
Soft Landing
The final email is a personal check-in, not a hard sell. Non-buyers leave the sequence warm for future campaigns instead of unsubscribed.
Real numbers from a real 8-email welcome sequence

Thanks for checking this out. This document will help you build a retention engine that keeps customers buying without burning through margin on discounts.
What I do
- Build email retention systems that generate consistent revenue for ecommerce brands doing $100K-$500K monthly
- Embed myself into your brand voice so every email sounds unmistakably like you
- Create promotional strategies that protect margin while keeping your list engaged year-round
- Design the 30-Day Email Engine, a complete retention foundation with a $25K revenue guarantee
My approach is different. I don't touch generic templates or cookie-cutter campaigns. This is boutique, voice-driven email marketing where I become an extension of your brand for 18+ months on average. No junior copywriters. No bloated agency bureaucracy. Just strategic retention work that CEOs actually care about.
I've helped brands like Ancestral Supplements generate $7.6M in attributed email revenue by focusing on loyalty and LTV, not just broadcast blasts.
